Satirical Politics and Late-Night Television Ratings

    Get PDF
Since the 2016 Presidential election, it has become increasingly difficult to turn on the television or log onto social media without being informed of everything happening at The White House. This includes late-night television. What once was meant for humorous jokes and celebrity interviews suitable for any pop culture follower has not gotten less funny, but nowadays, the jokes are not always jokes. Satirical news has been around for a long time with The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, but as of 2016, the line between fact and fiction cannot be as easily differentiated between as it used to. Now that late-night programs such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Show, Late Night and even Jimmy Fallon’s version of The Tonight Show have begun making political statements and producing politically motivated skits, my research is asking the question: How do people like this mix of business and pleasure, and what impact is this shift in content having on the shows’ ratings? Are people switching off their favorite late-night programs because where they once went for a break from reality became a reminder of it, instead

Off-diagonal hyperfine interaction between the 6p1/2 and 6p3/2 levels in 133Cs

The off-diagonal hyperfine interaction between the 6p1/2 and 6p3/2 states in 133Cs is evaluated in third-order MBPT giving 37.3 Hz and 48.3 Hz, respectively, for second-order energies of the 6p3/2 F=3 and F=4 levels. This result is a factor of 10 smaller than one obtained from an uncorrelated first-order Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculation and used in the analysis of a recent high-precision (< 2 kHz) measurement of the 6p3/2 hyperfine structure [Gerginov et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 72301 (2003)]. The factor of 10 difference has negligible effect on the conclusions of the recent experiment but will become important for experiments carried out at a precision of better than 1 kHz

Utilization and Application of Business Computing Systems in Corporate Real Estate

    Get PDF
This study reports on the utilization of business computing systems by corporate real estate executives. A survey was undertaken to examine four issues: types of property data collected, MIS report generation, hardware/software usage, and decision models and experts employed. NACORE members were surveyed and reported extensive usage of well-known business computing systems (e.g., transaction processing and management information systems), while newer systems (e.g., decision support and expert systems) are just beginning to be introduced into corporate real estate. Empirical analysis revealed differences among industries in the types of reports and property financial data that are maintained.

Nourishing Solidarity: Critical Food Pedagogy and Storytelling for Community

    Get PDF
This piece was delivered in four parts in tandem with a four-course meal, with the intention of providing the audience with time to engage in the sharing of their own perspectives around food and eating. Foodways, the particular cultural and social contexts within which food sits offer a unique entry point into deeper, more connective opportunities for environmental education. The food justice and food sovereignty movements provide a foil for traditional forms of environmental education which reinforce settler-colonial narratives about the more-than-human world. Food is something that everyone has some sort of interaction with every single day. At the same time, historically food has been used as both a tool of liberation and oppression. Because of the interconnectedness of food, spirituality and identity, the denial of Indigenous communities of their traditional foodways is an intentional act of cultural genocide. Teaching about and acknowledging these atrocities is a step towards reparations, and inviting discussion about personal connection to food is a way forward. Indeed, the simple act of eating is itself a pedagogical act: it speaks to both the identity of the person who prepared it, as well as to the experience of the eater

The Search for Other Planets and Life

This Les Houches School offers students a wide ranging view of the field of exoplanets and the search for life beyond the solar system. Observational and theoretical opportunities abound in a new field of astronomy that will be growing for decades to come. I give a brief introduction and overview to the many detailed talks that will be presented in this volume

Fine and Large Coulomb Diamonds in a Silicon Quantum Dot

We experimentally study the transport properties of silicon quantum dots (QDs) fabricated from a highly doped n-type silicon-on-insulator wafer. Low noise electrical measurements using a low temperature complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (LTCMOS) amplifier are performed at 4.2 K in liquid helium. Two series of Coulomb peaks are observed: long-period oscillations and fine structures, and both of them show clear source drain voltage dependence. We also observe two series of Coulomb diamonds having different periodicity. The obtained experimental results are well reproduced by a master equation analysis using a model of double QDs coupled in parallel.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Jpn. J. Appl. Phy
